I picked up the book because I too was a kibbutz volunteer way back when (Kibbutz Erez near Gaza). I have two boys and I had hoped they too could experience life on the kibbutz which I found to be a great experience. Doesn't look like that is going to happen, however. But Leach's book was amazingly well researched a written. He traveled all over Israel and noted that even though the old forms of the kibbutzim had disappeared, there were new forms arising; eco-kibbutzim, Arava Institute, and communities of multi-ethnicity that are inspiring. The new town of Rawabi in the West Bank is also very interesting. With the description of these new communities, Leach gives background on the disputes and issues surrounded them and the battles between Israel and the Palestinians. Leach has sparked my interest and I hope to visit Israel in the next year or so to visit some of these communities and kibbutzim. (suggestion to the author; when referring to kibbutz in the plural, use kibbutzim. "Kibbutzes" sounds horrible. Kind of like when people speaking spanlish say "no problemo".)

My wife I did visit Israel a few years ago. She loves Nutella, and thinking she might not find any there, she packed a couple of large jars in her suitcase. This resulted in her bag being held up for two days as the Israeli security made sure it wasn't a bomb. As it turned out, yes you can buy Nutella in Israel.
